Hailing from Boise, Idaho, we are excited to introduce you to our new Axis brand ambassadors: the Rowley family. Nick and Whitney Rowley are proud parents of daughter Cashy, a rising star in the board sports world. Whether she's on the water or the slopes, Cashy's adventures are a regular feature on the Rowley family's popular Instagram page and other social channels.

The Dad

The family's action sports lifestyle is spearheaded by Nick, a lifelong adrenaline junkie and action sports enthusiast. Originally from Idaho Falls, after finishing high school, Nick went to San Diego for college where the action sports bug bit. "I learned you could be a team manager in the marketing world. I began as an intern with a snowboard company and worked my way up to being an athlete manager, working with top snowboarders, skiers and wakeboarders," he recalled.

Hype Mom

Whitney, meanwhile, grew up in Idaho Falls and had known Nick since junior high. During high school, she took a job as a snowboard instructor. After high school, she qualified as a teacher, but her teaching career took an unexpected turn as she went on to be a swim instructor on military bases around the world. Upon Cashy's arrival years later, Whitney's teaching qualification proved to be useful in an unexpected way. "Today, I homeschool Cash. My education and experience have been serendipitous because all of it set me up for this moment as her mom, to be able to teach her."

Going solo

After a brief stint working for Under Armor in Baltimore, Nick joined a startup marketing agency focused on influencer marketing. When that agency was acquired, he and Whitney decided to take the leap and start their own marketing agency. "We were doing social media marketing for big brands including Reebok and various others," he said. "And then Covid hit."

Selling Up

The damage caused to their business by Covid-induced client losses was immediate and immense. With young Cashy to look after and little to no income, Nick and Whitney made a drastic decision. "We sold all of our belongings - the car, furniture, our house - everything that we could ultimately replace. Except for our snowboards and surfboards. We kept those and stored them!" Nick recalled, chuckling. "Then we bought a van and traveled around during Covid. Cashy was three years old and it was awesome."

Van Life Memories

Being in a van during Covid lockdowns allowed the Rowley family to experience America in a unique, unforgettable way. "We were in Yellowstone and nobody was there. We'd to go Alabama Hills in California in May, when normally it's really busy with bouldering people, and it was just us. It was surreal," Nick remarked. "We were very lucky with the timing we picked to make that move. The memories are irreplaceable!" Nick subsequently spent a year working for a large corporation before getting burnt out and deciding to pursue the influencer life with his family full-time. By all metrics, it was a very successful decision. "We have been doing this for three years now and it's been amazing. We've taken Cashy to fifteen different countries; she's met athletes and had opportunities that are amazing even for us as adults!"

Joining the Axis Family

The Rowleys became part of the Axis boats family in early June 2024, taking delivery of a green 2023 Axis T235. The family promptly named the boat 'Dream' following a suggestion from daughter Cashy. "We were trying not to be like so many other people who have a very boat-centric name. Cashy suggested Dream and we went with it since it fits our brand well. I've always said, "I'm living the dream!" Nick revealed.

Easy to Drive

Of the three, Cashy has spent the most time wakeboarding and surfing behind the boat thus far, leaving Mom and Dad to take care of the driving. Though Nick spent a lot of time on boats growing up, Whitney was a newcomer to boating and for her, the ease of driving their T235 has been a real highlight. "As someone who didn't grow up around boats, I like that it's easy for me to use the controls; the speed controls are especially easy," she said.

Surf Band

"The Surf Band also makes things easier, allowing Nick to control the boat while he's back there. I really like that he can help me in that way. The boat in general is very easy to operate, especially with its user-friendly touchscreen that shows you exactly what you're doing at any time. It's super helpful for any beginner!" Whitney added.

Surf Pipe

Nick and Whitney especially love the Surf Pipe that is now standard on all Axis boats. Surf Pipe pushes the exhaust below and behind the rider, ensuring that they breathe clean, fresh air while behind the boat. "It's such an impressive feature," said Nick. "I don't want my little girl huffing exhaust fumes back there. That's my favorite safety feature on the boat."

The Family that Surfs Together

The Rowley family's interest in wakesurfing and wakeboarding developed from their love for board sports in general, particularly snowboarding, surfing, and skating. Nick was proud to take the blame for motivating the family's continued interest in these exciting sports. "Our love for it all comes from me growing up around it. I grew up around skateboarding and snowboarding We would snowboard all winter and be up at the lake all summer. I started skating when I moved to California! It's been a part of our lives all the way through."

For Whitney, the family's ability to now spend time together wake surfing has been priceless. "When Nick and I moved to California, I could only surf, and then when Cash came along, we wanted to snowboard as a family. First, I learned to skate with Cashy and now we get to surf behind the boat. It's something that the three of us can all do together and the memories we're creating together are incredibly special."

Do it Scared

Axis Boats is proud to be associated with the Rowley family. After all, the family represents the aspirations of many of our existing and future customers. Knowing that some families may be nervous about introducing their children to water sports, we asked the Rowleys for their advice based on their own experiences with Cashy. Cashy was quick to offer her advice: "If you're scared, do it scared!" she said. "Go for it, and don't panic! Arms straight. Knees bent. Let the boat pull you up!"

Cashy was quick to offer her advice: "If you're scared, do it scared!" she said. "Go for it, and don't panic! Arms straight. Knees bent. Let the boat pull you up!"

Whitney agreed. "The biggest lesson I have learned is to be patient. It's easy for us as parents with our own children to get upset or frustrated when we can't get the technique or if our efforts are not working. For that reason, we try to emphasize having fun and to just keep trying!"

Learn to Swim

"Get swim lessons first," said Nick. "That gives the kids a closed setting in a pool where they can learn the dynamics of being in the water."

"Then once you're out on the water with the boat, just have fun!" he emphasized. "Make it fun so that the kids are comfortable being off the boat, for example when the boat drifts away, then they're comfortable swimming back to it."

Take it Slow

And finally, he encouraged parents to simply take it slowly. "We all - people in general - live fast-paced lifestyles, but in boating, it's better to go slow; take it easy. When you rush stuff, that's when things can go wrong. It's counterintuitive, but like, when someone falls, if you go back to them too fast, you can swamp the boat or overshoot them. So, for parents: Take them to swim lessons, have fun, and get them into it slowly."
